Directed by Avie Luthra

Delicately crafted, both in story and visual style, this beautiful, emotional tale explores the unusual alliance between an elderly Indian woman (with an irrational fear of Africans) and a South African orphan in post-Apartheid South Africa. Using a muted color palette to reflect themes of nostalgia and family connection, Luthra unravels a complicated story featuring amazing performances from the two main actors. Filmed in Zulu, Hindi, and English, the film is a true international production.

A critical and audience favorite, Lucky is based on Luthra’s earlier short of the same name, which won over 40 international awards including an Oscar nomination. The feature has won Best Actress Abu Dhabi Film Festival, Best Film Bengaluru International Film Festival, and was the official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, and Toronto Black Film Festival.

Luthra’s film will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker about the South Asian community and its relationship to the Black Lives Matter movement.
